INERIS devote an increasing part of its researches to chronic risks through ecotoxicology and toxicology, including the study of the impact of toxic substances in low doses on ecosystems and human health.

The various research topics studied aim to assess the risks and impacts at each stage of industrial activity (safety during commissioning of an industrial plant, detection and characterization of sources of danger such as fire or explosion during processing, accidental releases or product risks).

The Institute actively cooperates with other organizations with complementary skills. It participates and sometimes conducts scientific collaboration networks that enable it to integrate the progress of new knowledge in the development of prevention and optimal protection.

The Institute's research is funded by the civil budget for research and technological development (BCRD), and some by the European Union. INERIS also conducts research programs in partnership with industry.
