Acquisition of Ammonia Emission factors in flesh poultry animal farm in France

Scientific and technical goals pursued by the project are the following:

  • The acquisition of new knowledge on the ammonia emission factors related to the production of poultries of French flesh by integrating the diversity of the national modes of production (standard houses and houses equipped with heat exchangers).
  • Identification of solutions allowing the reduction of ammonia emissions (analysis of emission factors). The quantification of the greenhouse gas emissions during this project will enable us to make sure that the effective solutions for ammonia do not generate transfers of pollution.

An originality of this project lies in the method implemented for the acquisition of the emission factors in animal farms and on the number and the representativeness of gathered data in animal farms. The emissions will be given starting from a single method which allows to compare the weakest gas emission factors. The current acquisition of measurements methods are heavy and expensive. The variability of the current results cannot be only charged to the variability of the conduits but also to the impact of the measurements methods employed. In the majority of the cases, the data of gas emissions placed at the disposal are unusable because of the lack of information on the conditions of acquisition. That is why during the project, emissions will be measured using the same protocol on all farms, technical and climatic data will be recorded along with emissions measures.

On the one hand the literature provides data of seldom validated gas emissions (by comparison of methods). For example, it appears relevant to check that the measured ammonia emission factor is not higher than the nitrogen loss total (calculated by mass balance). On the other hand, the available data in the literature are, in most cases, for the comparison of systems and not for the determination of emissions used as absolute values in assessment tools factors.

The protocol of data acquisition rests on a method of emission measurement, innovating, implemented on a large scale for the first time in this project. It will be applied to a significant number of animal farms and under contrasted conditions (climate, techniques,…). To date, to the knowledge of the authors, no study of this width was undertaken in France and abroad. Moreover, simultaneous data acquisition of ammonia emissions and greenhouse gas emissions (CH4, N2O, CO2) is a major innovation.
