Mass balance of a storage

Guidelines for the measurement of the mass balance deficit of a manure storage

figure_BilanStockage

Introduction

The objective of this handling is to define the loss of mass during storage of animal manure. This low-cost process is adapted to the cases where liquid and solid inputs, and outputs, can be well defined. The period of measurement should cover several weeks so that the mass deficit is higher than the uncertainty on the inputs and outputs. The mass balance deficit is calculated for water, carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and some elements or isotopes contained in the manure.

Equipment

  • containers for collecting all samplings during sampling operations (either in the stock or during input-output operations)
  • container (or area) and equipment for mixing and dividing the samples collected
  • bags or containers for storing and transporting the samples
  • labels for sample identification (date, place, number, type of effluent, project)
  • material for taking notes
  • weighing machine for recording the weights of bag (or container) and sample
  • equipment for grinding the sample (either frozen or fresh or dry, depending on the analysis procedures)
