Gas emissions of Technical Routes in porcine animal farms (house-storage-spreading) combining good environmental practices

Project EMITEC aims to inform on the abatement effectiveness of the ammonia emissions of porcine manure management routes by taking in account the station houses, storage and spreading. The routes selected are those which could relate to much porcine animal farms and on the level of which practices of upstream can have an incidence downstream, or those in which practices moved by an effectiveness awaited on an environmental aspect can have consequences on other environmental aspects. The ambitious and innovative character is mainly due to different methods of pig waste management from the houses to spreading.

Scientific and technical objectives are the following:

  • To decline the measurements methods of the gas emissions, developped at the point on storage units (uncovered) in preceding projects, for different methods of storage:
    • covered pits
    • pits equipped with a flare
    • pits with daily contributions
  • To validate the application of simplified measurement methods of the gas emissions to manure management routes different from usual methods (storage in pre-pits in the house for the period of presence of the animals, then non covered outside storage before spreading). The more frequent contributions in pit of storage and the installation of a cover can modify the emissions dynamics through the time and require an adjustment of the periods of specific measurements.
  • To work out a reference procedure for the gas emissions measurement for the various management stages of the house. This procedure will be based on the simplified methods developed for the house and storage during the preceding projects. Those require technical data of animal farm complementary between the house and storage.
  • To acquire emission factors for inventories calculations, the environmental evaluation and the environmental fluxes models.
  • To identify and propose technical routes having a reduced environmental impact (emissions NH3 and greenhouse gases attenuated). These informations will supplement in particular the charts of good environmental practices of animal farms placed at the disposal of the farmers since October 2010, and relayed at the European level within the framework of the revision of the MTD.

The ambitious and innovating character of this project is reinforced by the installation of management routes of the porcine slurries in bond with individual rooms of fattening. It will be necessary to connect each room of fattening with at least one storage pit then a spreading. These routes of management do not really exist in animal farms (generally all the slurry of the animal farm goes in a common pit of storage outside). However their scale is the only relevant to conclude on the impact of choice on the upstream stages swallow manure management.
